I’ll be honest, the easiest way of getting around in Kitchener is to drive. The city is connected by major highways including Highway 7, Highway 8, and Highway 401. This makes it accessible from nearby cities like Toronto, Cambridge, and Waterloo.
Traffic in Kitchener is generally lighter compared to larger Ontario cities, although rush hour can get busy around the downtown core and Highway 401 access points. If you don’t like traffic, I recommend avoiding the Conestoga Parkway as it gets busy and is often backed up.
Parking is widely available throughout the city, especially at shopping centres, attractions, and hotels. Downtown Kitchener offers both street parking and parking garages, making it easy to explore restaurants, cafés, and local shops.
Public Transit Is Easy
One of the best options for getting around in Kitchener without a car is the local transit system operated by Grand River Transit.
The system includes buses and the popular ION light rail transit (LRT), which connects Kitchener to Waterloo. The ION is clean, modern, and incredibly convenient for exploring the region without worrying about parking.

Driver’s Tip: If you’re visiting Kitchener for the first time, I recommend booking accommodations close to the downtown core. This is the best place to stay in Kitchener as it’s easily walkable if arriving by train and it’s close to many of the things to do in Kitchener if you don’t have a car.
