Ontario may be famous for its beautiful lakes, charming small towns, and scenic road trips, but what you might not know is that it’s also home to some of Canada’s best wine country. With more than 180 wineries spread across several unique wine regions, Ontario offers incredible tasting experiences for everyone. In this guide to Ontario Wine Regions, I’ll share everything you need to know to explore Ontario wine regions.
If you’re planning a weekend getaway or adding a winery stop to your next Ontario road trip, each wine region has its own personality, landscapes, and locally produced wines waiting to be discovered.

Popular Ontario Wine Regions
Ontario’s wine scene has grown into one of Canada’s most exciting travel experiences, offering a mix of lakeside vineyards, small-batch wineries, and scenic tasting routes. The province’s wine regions benefit from a unique climate shaped by the Great Lakes, which help moderate temperatures and create ideal growing conditions for cool-climate grape varieties like Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay.
Let’s take a closer look at the popular wine regions that visitors can explore when in Ontario.
Niagara Peninsula
When people think of Ontario wine, the Niagara Peninsula is usually the first destination that comes to mind. There’s a good reason for this. The Niagara Region is home to the most wineries and produces the largest amount of wine. It’s also the closest wine region to Toronto which makes it a popular day trip when visiting Toronto.
Producing nearly 90% of Ontario’s grapes, this region enjoys a unique climate thanks to Lake Ontario and the Niagara Escarpment. The Niagara Peninsula is divided into several sub-appellations, each with slightly different growing conditions that create distinctive wines.
When visiting the wineries in the Niagara Region, you can can enjoy everything from intimate boutique wineries to large estate vineyards complete with restaurants, patios, and vineyard tours.

There are three distince wine regions found in Niagara and each region has its own destinctive qualities:
- Niagara-on-the-Lake
- Niagara Benchlands
- Twenty Valley
Niagara-on-the-Lake is home to the most amount of wineries, as well as the largest Ontario wineries, while the wineries found in the Niagara Benchlands offer a more intimate atmosphere.
Many wineries also host live music, food pairings, vineyard walks, and seasonal festivals throughout the year.
Fun Fact: The Niagara Region produces more volume of ice wine than all other countries combined
Prince Edward County
Prince Edward County has become one of Ontario’s trendiest wine destinations. Known for its relaxed atmosphere and stunning rural scenery, “The County”, as it’s called, is perfect for a leisurely weekend getaway.
The limestone-rich soil and cool climate produce elegant wines with bright acidity and plenty of character.
Many wineries feature beautiful patios overlooking the vineyards, which makes them the perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon.
One of my favourite things about visiting Prince Edward County is how easy it is to combine wine tasting with local restaurants, artisan shops, beaches, and boutique accommodations.

Lake Erie North Shore
Located in southwestern Ontario near Ontario’s most southern town of Kingsville, Lake Erie North Shore enjoys Canada’s warmest grape-growing climate.
The longer growing season allows wineries to produce rich, full-bodied wines while maintaining excellent fruit flavours.
Although it’s less visited than Niagara, this region offers a quieter experience with welcoming wineries and fewer crowds.
If you’re exploring southwestern Ontario, this wine region makes a wonderful hidden gem to include on your itinerary.
Pelee Island
Ontario’s southernmost wine region sits on beautiful Pelee Island in Lake Erie.
Getting there requires a ferry ride, which makes the journey part of the adventure. Once on the island, visitors can enjoy quiet roads, cycling, beaches, birdwatching, and locally produced wines.
The island’s mild climate creates ideal conditions for growing premium grapes.
A visit here feels like escaping to a completely different world without leaving Ontario.
Driver’s Tip: The wineries on Pelee Island can be visited in conjunction with the Lake Erie North Shore Wineries, but it’s recommended to allow for two days to account for the time required to take the ferry from the mainland to Pelee Island
Emerging Ontario Wine Regions
The wine regions outlined in this post are Ontario’s most popular wine regions, but Ontario’s wine industry continues to grow beyond its traditional destinations.
Wine lovers wanting to veer away from the popular wine destinations to explore the lesser known wineries will want to head towards:
- Norfolk County
- Huron County
- Georgian Bay
- Ottawa Valley
- Northumberland County
Many of these wineries are family-owned operations offering personalized tasting experiences and opportunities to meet the winemakers themselves.
Driver’s Tip: My favourite up and coming wine destination is Norfolk County. It offers several great wineries and brew pubs, as well as some unique places to stay if you want to spend the night.
Tips for Visiting Ontario Wine Regions
Visiting the different wine regions has become a popular thing to do in Ontario, but there are a few things you can do to make your winery adventure even better:
- Visit during weekdays for a quieter experience.
- Book tastings ahead during summer and fall.
- Designate a driver or join a wine tour.
- Wear comfortable shoes for walking through vineyards.
- Bring a cooler if you’re purchasing wine during warm weather.
- Ask staff about food pairings—they’re often full of excellent recommendations.
- Don’t rush. Plan to visit only three or four wineries each day so you can truly enjoy the experience.
Best Time to Visit
Every season is the best time to visit one of Ontario’s wine region, but each season offers something different.
Spring: brings fresh vineyard growth and smaller crowds.
Summer: is ideal for enjoying patios, vineyard views, and outdoor events.
Fall: is harvest season, making it one of the most exciting times to visit as wineries buzz with activity and vineyards display spectacular autumn colours.
Winter: offers cozy tasting rooms and the opportunity to experience Ontario’s world-famous Icewine.
Driver’s Tip: Visit the Burning Kiln Winery in Norfolk County during the Fall to experience the Fall Harvest Hike
