One of the things that I loved most about my visit to Kingston was spending time along the waterfront and in the downtown core. I absolutely loved searching for the best waterfront patios and restaurants in Kingston! There is something special about sitting on a patio watching sailboats drift by and people watching while enjoying a great meal.

It doesn’t matter if you’re visiting Kingston for a weekend getaway, a road trip stop, or an extended stay, the city’s waterfront and downtown dining scene is one of its biggest highlights. In fact, Kingston has the most restaurants per capita in Canada, so there is no shortage of great places to eat.

During my recent visit, I made it my mission to find some of the best waterfront patios and restaurants in Kingston. From casual pub fare to upscale dining experiences, in this post I share my top picks for enjoying the best meals along the Kingston watefront and downtown core.

AquaTerra

Location: 1 Johnson Street

If you’re looking for a memorable waterfront dining experience, AquaTerra should be at the top of your list. Located inside the Delta Hotel Kingston Waterfront, this restaurant offers beautiful views of the harbour through its large windows and patio seating.

The menu focuses on locally sourced ingredients and seasonal dishes. I loved the relaxed atmosphere combined with the upscale menu. It’s the perfect spot for a special dinner, date night, or celebrating a milestone while visiting Kingston.

The Aqua Terra offers guests stunning harbour views, an excellent wine selection, and beautiful sunsets, all while enjoying an upscale dining experience.

The Bank Gastrobar (Frontenac Club)

Location: 225 King Street East

One of the most unique dining experiences I had in Kingston was at The Bank Gastrobar. Housed inside a beautifully restored former bank building in downtown Kingston, the restaurant perfectly blends historic architecture with modern dining. From the moment I stepped inside, I was impressed by the soaring ceilings, original architectural details, and stylish atmosphere that make this restaurant stand out from many others in the city. It feels upscale without being intimidating, making it a great choice for everything from date nights to special occasions.

The Bank is open for dining from 3:30 Wednesday through Saturday. Reservations are recommended but not required. This is the place to go if you’re looking to cool off and relax after a day of exploring and are only looking for a light snack to go with your specialty cocktail.

The Pilot House: Best Fish & Chip Restaurant In Kingston

Location: 265 King Street East

The Pilot House is a Kingston institution and one of my favourite spots near Confederation Basin. The waterfront location makes it a great place to stop for lunch after exploring downtown Kingston.

Their patio offers excellent views of the marina, and the menu features everything from fresh seafood to burgers and pub classics. The laid-back atmosphere makes it ideal for travellers looking for a casual meal with a great view.

If you’re looking for a restaurant with a casual atmosphere and great fish and chips within the downtown location, then The Piolot House is the spot for you.

Dianne’s Fish Shack & Smokehouse

Location: 195 Ontario Street

While not directly on the water, Dianne’s is just steps from Kingston’s waterfront and deserves a spot on this list. If you’re a seafood lover, this restaurant is a must-visit.

Their lobster rolls and fish tacos have become legendary in Kingston, and after trying the lobster roll myself, I completely understand why. The vibrant atmosphere and fresh menu make it one of the city’s most popular dining destinations.

This restaurant is best known for its fish tacos, fresh seafood, and fun atmosphere. It’s also an easy walk from the waterfront and features an outdoor patio which is great for people watching

Time Out Bar & Bistro

Location: 167 Ontario Street

Time Out Bar is a casual downtown Kingston spot that tends to draw a mix of locals, students, and visitors looking for an easygoing night out. It has a laid-back, no-frills atmosphere where the focus is more on hanging out with friends than anything overly polished or formal. Depending on the night, you might find a steady crowd enjoying drinks, playing pool, or just settling in for a relaxed evening after exploring the city.

What makes Time Out Bar a familiar stop in Kingston’s nightlife scene is its straightforward, social vibe.

Olivea: Best Pasta In Kingston

Location: 39 Brock Street

Although I didn’t have time to eat at this restaurant, I felt I needed to include it in the list of the best restaurants in Kingston, as it was recommended to us by all of the locals.

Olivea isn’t directly on the waterfront, but its downtown location places it only a short walk from the harbour. This Italian-inspired restaurant is one of Kingston’s most popular dining spots.

I understand that it’s an excellent option when you want a slightly more refined meal after spending the day exploring the waterfront.

Olivea offers fantastic pasta dishes and an elegant atmosphere. It came highly recommended by the locals, so you know it’s a good spot to eat.

Ghost Tacos

Location: 275 Princess Street (inside Something In The Water)

If you’re looking for a fun and flavourful dining experience in Kingston, Ghost Tacos is a must-visit. Located in the heart of downtown, this vibrant taco shop has quickly become a favourite among locals and visitors alike. The atmosphere is casual, welcoming, and full of personality, making it the perfect stop for a quick lunch, casual dinner, or late-night bite after exploring the city.

I loved how each taco was packed with fresh ingredients and generous portions, making it hard to choose a favourite.

Something In The Water

Location: 275 Princess Street

One of my favourite discoveries while exploring Kingston’s waterfront and downtown core was Something in the Water Brewing Co. This local brewery combines great craft beer with some of the best vibes in the city. The laid-back atmosphere makes it easy to settle in and stay awhile.

I particularly enjoyed a flight of locally crafted beers, which is complententary if you purchase the Kingston K-Pass. What makes Something in the Water special is how it captures Kingston’s local character. It’s a great place to meet up with friends, unwind after exploring downtown, or simply enjoy a good craft beer.

Helm Dockside Patio: The Best Waterfront Patio In Kingston

Location: 1 Brock Street, Crawford Warf

The Helm Dockside Patio is one of Kingston’s standout waterfront patios, sitting right on Crawford Wharf with direct views over the harbour. It has that perfect “dockside” feel where you’re essentially sitting at the edge of the water, watching boats come and go.The atmosphere is relaxed and summery, with picnic-style seating, easygoing service, and a steady hum of music that adds to the vibe without overpowering conversation.

What really makes The Helm feel like the best waterfront patio in Kingston is the combination of location and experience. You’re not just near the water. You’re right in it, surrounded by sailboats, tour boats, and the movement of the harbour. It’s an easy place to settle in for a drink, watch the sunset, and take in Kingston’s waterfront at its most lively and scenic.

Driver’s Tip: Everyday Happy Hour at The Helm Dockside Patio between 11:00 am and 12:00 pm and 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm. This is the ideal spot to relax with a drink while waiting to board your 1000 Island Cruise.

Kingston Coffee House

Location: 322 King Street East

Kingston Coffee House is one of those coffee shops that really captures the feel of Kingston’s local coffee culture. With a few locations around the city, it’s known for serving organic, locally roasted espresso and a menu that leans into fresh, made-in-house baked goods and seasonal drinks.

Beyond the drinks themselves, part of what makes Kingston Coffee House so popular is the atmosphere. The combination of freshly brewed coffee, friendly service, and that distinctly Kingston feel (laid-back but still full of character) helps it earn its reputation as one of the city’s best all-around coffee stops.

Beavertails

Location: 20 Market Street

Everyone loves a sweet treat once in awhile. All first-time visitors to Ontario can’t leave without trying the Beavertail, one of the traditional foods of Canada.

The Beavertail is a fried dough pastry which is served with your choice of toppings. The original Beavertail was topped with sugar, but the toppings have since evolved and now you have multiple choices.

Beavertails in Kingston is located a block up from the waterfront and across the street from the outdoor market.

Why I Love Dining Along Kingston’s Waterfront And Downtown Core

One thing I quickly noticed about Kingston is how connected the city is to the water. The waterfront isn’t just a scenic backdrop, it’s part of the city’s identity.

Many of the city’s best restaurants are located within walking distance of the waterfront trail, Confederation Basin Marina, and the downtown core, making it easy to spend an entire day exploring before settling in for a meal with a view.

Kingston offers some of the best waterfront dining experiences in Ontario. Whether you’re looking for a casual patio overlooking the marina, fresh seafood near the harbour, or an upscale dinner with sunset views, you’ll find plenty of excellent options.

On my next visit, I’ll definitely be returning to AquaTerra for the views, The Pilot House for the best fish and chips, and Dianne’s Fish Shack for another round of those amazing fish tacos.
