Visiting Casa Loma In Toronto
As a life-long resident of Ontario, I’ve been to Toronto more times than I can count, but I had never been to Casa Loma – until recently that is. To say that I was impressed is an understatement. In this post, I share a bit of the castles history, what you can expect, and some tips to help you make the most of your visit to the castle.
The History Of Casa Loma

Casa Loma, North America’s only full sized castle, was built between 1911 and 1914 by wealthy financier Sir Henry Pellatt, who dreamed of creating a grand European-style castle in Toronto. At the time, it was one of the largest private residences in Canada, featuring nearly 100 rooms, luxurious furnishings, and cutting-edge technology for its era, including an elevator, central vacuum system, and telephone network with over 100 telephones.
Sir Henry Pellatt amassed his fortune through investments in railways and electricity. However, financial challenges and increasing taxes eventually forced him to leave the estate in 1924. After changing ownership several times, Casa Loma was preserved and transformed into one of Toronto’s most beloved tourist attractions.
Today, visitors can explore the beautifully restored rooms while learning about the fascinating story of the man who built one of Canada’s most extravagant homes.
What To See At Casa Loma

One of the highlights of visiting Casa Loma is wandering through its stunning interiors. The Great Hall impresses visitors with its soaring ceilings and intricate architectural details, while the Library showcases rich woodwork and elegant décor. The Conservatory offers a bright and colourful space filled with natural light and seasonal displays.
Be sure to climb the towers for panoramic views of Toronto. On a clear day, you can enjoy incredible views of the city skyline that make for fantastic photos.
One of the most exciting parts of the castle is the network of underground tunnels. These passageways connect the main castle to the stables and carriage house. This offers a glimpse into how the estate operated more than a century ago.
Movie lovers may also recognize Casa Loma from numerous film and television productions. The castle has appeared in popular productions including X-Men, Chicago, and The Handmaid’s Tale.
Driver’s Tip: Entrance to Casa Loma is included when purchasing the Toronto City Pass

Exploring The Gardens
Unfortunately when I visited Casa Loma, the gardens were closed for some seasonal work. But I’ve been told that the gardens surrounding Casa Loma are particularly beautiful during the warmer months. From late spring through early fall, visitors can stroll among colourful flower beds, fountains, sculptures, and peaceful walking paths.
The gardens provide some of the best photo opportunities on the property and offer a relaxing escape from the busy streets of downtown Toronto. If you’re visiting Casa Loma in Toronto during summer, plan to spend extra time outdoors exploring the grounds.

Getting To Casa Loma From Downtown Toronto
If you’re visiting Casa Loma starting from downtown Toronto, getting to Casa Loma is straightforward by either transit or car.
By Subway (Fastest Transit Option): From downtown stations such as Union, St. Andrew, Osgoode, or St. Patrick:
- Take TTC Line 1 (Yonge-University) northbound toward Vaughan Metropolitan Centre.
- Get off at Dupont Station.
- Exit the station and walk north on Spadina Road for about 8–10 minutes to Casa Loma. You can either take the Baldwin Steps (110 steps) or follow the gentler route along Davenport Road and Walmer Road.
Travel time: Approximately 20–30 minutes from Union Station, including the walk.
Driver’s Tip: If you have a problem with stairs, I highly recommend taking the gentler route along Davenport and Walmer Road. The stairs are difficult.

By Car: From downtown Toronto:
- Head north on Avenue Road or Spadina Avenue.
- Follow signs toward Davenport Road.
- Continue to Austin Terrace, where Casa Loma is located at 1 Austin Terrace.
Casa Loma has a paid on-site parking lot accessed from Walmer Road. Parking is generally the easiest option if you’re driving, as nearby street parking is limited and often restricted.
Driving time: Usually 10–20 minutes from downtown, depending on traffic. During rush hour it can take longer.
My Recommendation:
Driving in Toronto is chaotic! For most visitors (myself included) the subway is actually easier than driving. Dupont Station is very close to the castle, and you avoid Toronto traffic and parking fees. The walk up to Casa Loma offers some beautiful views of the castle as it comes into view above the hill.

Is Visiting Casa Loma In Toronto Worth It?
Absolutely it is! Casa Loma offers a unique combination of history, architecture, and breathtaking views that you won’t find anywhere else in Toronto. You can explore secret tunnels and grand halls to learn about Sir Henry Pellatt’s ambitious vision. Every corner of the castle tells a story.
Whether you’re interested in Toronto’s history, looking for family-friendly attractions, or simply searching for one of the city’s most photogenic destinations, Casa Loma delivers an unforgettable experience. It’s one of those places that makes you forget you’re in the middle of Canada’s largest city and transports you to another time entirely.
For first-time visitors to Toronto, Casa Loma remains one of the city’s most iconic attractions and a must-see destination.
