I have always loved my road trips, but eventually for me they began to become more than just a way to travel. Road trips became a lifeline. A form of healing that I knew I needed, but couldn’t find. In this blog post, I’m going to share with you how road trips help to heal, together with some helpful tips to try along the way.
After experiencing deep loss and heartbreak, I felt unmoored, like the world I knew had shifted beneath my feet. Grief has a way of making everything feel too loud and too quiet at the same time. I didn’t know how to move forward, and for a while, I wasn’t sure I even wanted to. But then I started driving. Not with a destination in mind, but with a desire to breathe again.
That’s how my healing journey began: one mile, one backroad, one sunrise at a time. It was during these moments that I began to see beauty once again.
Everyone grieves differently, wich means that everyone also heals differently. For me, I found comfort in exploring the backroads and the hidden gems of Ontario, discovering new things, and finding unparalleled beauty that I thought was last forever.

Road Trips Help To Heal When Escaping To The Backroads
There’s comfort in motion. Something about watching the landscape change, the forests turning into small towns, and winding rivers giving way to quiet farmland. This reminds me that life still moves forward, even when we feel stuck.
Ontario’s backroads became my sanctuary. I’d pull off onto gravel shoulders just to listen to the wind, sit by hidden lakes I’d never heard of, and wander through small communities where no one knew my story. These moments allowed me to exist without expectation. I wasn’t someone grieving. I wasn’t someone trying to stay strong. I was just me being me on a road, learning how to breathe again.
Each turn in the road gave me something I had lost for a long time. Space. Space to me. Space to heal.
Road Trips Help to Heal By Peace Found In Quiet Places

Healing doesn’t happen all at once. It’s slow. Sometimes painfully slow. But the quiet places helped.
I found comfort in early morning light. The kind of light that makes the world feel soft and gentle. I found solace in pulling over to watch the birds dipping into a still lake or in hearing nothing but the crunch of gravel under my boots, as I wondered through the woods. These simple moments allowed me to feel grounded again.
Nature didn’t ask anything from me. It didn’t rush me or tell me to “move on.” It simply held space for me to be sad, to be quiet, and eventually, to be hopeful once again.
Learning To Enjoy My Own Company

Solo road trips taught me how to like myself again. When you’re alone on the road, you learn the sound of your own thoughts. At first, that felt uncomfortable, like a silence turned up too loud. But it became easier.
I sang along to songs I hadn’t heard in years. I stopped to take photos just because the light was pretty. I treated myself to roadside diners and little cafés where I could sip coffee slowly, letting the moments stretch. And there were even days that I struck up a conversation with a complete stranger. I always enjoy these times, as that stranger didn’t know my story. To her I’m just some lady who wants to talk.
I wasn’t just filling the hours. I was rediscovering pieces of myself that I thought I had lost.
Rediscovering Joy In Small Adventures

Grief can make the world feel dim. Road trips helped me notice colour again. It made me realize that if you open your eyes and your heart, you will find the beauty that you thought had been lost forever.
A farmer’s market in a town I stumbled upon by accident. A hiking trail that rewarded me with a waterfall I never expected. A bakery with the best butter tarts I’ve ever had. These small surprises reminded me that joy still exists, and most often in the places least expected.
Each little adventure helped rebuild something inside me. Piece by piece, I was learning to trust joy again.
Moving Forward, One Mile at a Time
The road didn’t “fix” everything. Healing isn’t linear, and it isn’t simple. But those miles helped me start moving forward when I couldn’t take emotional steps on my own.
Road trips taught me that healing doesn’t have to be loud or dramatic. Sometimes it’s just steady, quiet progress: choosing to get out of bed, choosing to start the car, choosing to follow the sun.
And little by little, the road carried me back to myself.

Today, road trips are still an essential part of my life. Not because I’m running from something, but because I’ve learned how powerful they can be.
They continue to keep me focused, and they remind me….

Most of all, they’ve shown me that even when life feels overwhelming, there’s always another road to take… another sunrise waiting… another hidden gem tucked away just waiting to be discovered.
