Why Kingston’s Waterfront is Worth Visiting
Kingston is uniquely positioned where Lake Ontario meets the St. Lawrence River and the Rideau Canal. This location gives the city one of the most picturesque waterfronts in Ontario.
What I love most is how accessible everything is. You can easily spend an entire day strolling along the shoreline, enjoying local restaurants, watching boats come and go, and taking in stunning views without ever needing to drive anywhere.
The waterfront combines historic charm with natural beauty, creating an atmosphere that’s both relaxing and exciting. In this guide to Kingston’s waterfront, I share my must-do recommendations when you visit Kingston.
Start Your Visit at Confederation Park
One of my favourite places to begin exploring Kingston’s waterfront is Confederation Park, as it seems to be the center of the activity.
Located right in downtown Kingston, the park offers beautiful lake views, green space to relax, and easy access to many waterfront attractions. During the summer months, you’ll often find festivals, live music, markets, and events taking place here. It’s also the perfect spot to sit on a bench with a coffee and watch the boats in the harbour.
From Confederation Park, you can easily walk to many of Kingston’s top waterfront attractions.
Walk the Kingston Waterfront Trail
One of the best ways to experience Kingston’s waterfront is simply by walking it.
The Kingston Waterfront Trail stretches along the shoreline and offers incredible views of Lake Ontario, Kingston Harbour, and nearby islands.
During my visit, I found this trail to be one of the most relaxing ways to experience the city. You’ll pass marinas, parks, public art installations, and plenty of scenic viewpoints perfect for photos.
If you’re visiting in the early morning or around sunset, the views become even more spectacular.
Take a 1000 Islands Cruise
If there’s one waterfront experience I highly recommend, it’s taking a 1000 Islands cruise from Kingston.
Departing directly from the waterfront, these cruises provide a unique perspective of the region. As you sail through the islands, you’ll see historic mansions, castles, lighthouses, and beautiful shoreline scenery.
I recently took a cruise and found it to be one of the highlights of my Kingston visit. Seeing the city skyline from the water gives you a completely different appreciation for Kingston’s location and history.
For first-time visitors, I would consider a 1000 Islands cruise a must-do waterfront activity.

Enjoy Waterfront Dining (Or Drinks 🙂 )
One thing Kingston does exceptionally well is waterfront dining.
Some of my favourite waterfront restaurants and patios offer incredible views alongside delicious food and drinks. There’s something special about enjoying a meal while watching sailboats glide across the harbour.
Whether you’re looking for casual fish tacos, upscale dining, or simply a cold drink on a sunny patio, Kingston’s waterfront restaurants provide plenty of options.
I recommend scheduling at least one waterfront meal during your Kingston trip because the views alone make the experience worthwhile.
Visit the Kingston Marina and Harbour
The Kingston Marina area is another spot I love exploring.
The harbour is constantly buzzing with activity, especially during the summer months. You’ll see sailboats, tour boats, kayakers, and private yachts coming and going throughout the day. Walking along the docks gives you a glimpse into Kingston’s strong boating culture and maritime history.
It’s also one of the best places to capture waterfront photos, particularly during golden hour.
‼️ Hidden Gem Alert: Relax at Breakwater Park
If you’re looking for a quieter waterfront experience, head to Breakwater Park.
This beautiful park offers open green space, walking paths, and unobstructed views of Lake Ontario. It’s a wonderful place to enjoy a picnic, watch the sunset, or simply relax away from the busier downtown areas.
I found it especially peaceful in the evening when the crowds thinned out and the lake reflected the changing colours of the sky.
Explore the Waterfront After Dark
Kingston’s waterfront takes on a completely different atmosphere once the sun goes down.
The lights from the marina, restaurants, and downtown buildings create a beautiful reflection across the water. Evening strolls along the waterfront have become one of my favourite parts of visiting Kingston.
The cooler temperatures, quieter pathways, and illuminated skyline make for a memorable end to any day spent exploring the city.
Visit The Kingston Tourist Center
Kingston’s tourist center is conveniently located in Confederation Park along the waterfront. This is the perfect first stop when visiting Kingston.
City tours can be booked at the tourist center and souvenirs can be purchased. The staff are extremely helpful and can provide recommendations or answer any questions you have. This is also where you begin the city history tour and trolley ghost tour, as well as catch the hop on hop off trolley.
‼️ Hidden Gem Alert: Admire The Street Art At The Delta Hotel
If you wander along the waterfront away from the action towards the Delta Hotel, you will find some incredible street art, as well as an upscale dining patio.
If you love art or are looking for a fun thing to do along Kingston’s waterfront, I highly recommend this.
Visit The S.S. Keewatin And The Great Lakes Museum
Along the Kingston waterfront just outside of the downtown core and away from the crowds, you can find the Great Lakes Museum and the S.S. Keewatin.
The S.S. Keewatin, built in 1907, is older than the titanic and is the last of her kind. Tours are available from May to November. Reservations should be made in advance to avoid disappointment.
Tips For Visiting Kingston’s Waterfront
Based on my experience, here are a few tips to help you enjoy your visit:
- Wear comfortable walking shoes – trust me, you will do A LOT of walking.
- Arrive early during summer weekends to avoid crowds.
- Bring a camera because you’ll find plenty of photo opportunities.
- Book your 1000 Islands cruise in advance during peak season.
- Plan time for both daytime and evening waterfront walks.
- Consider visiting during sunset for some of the best views in the city.
