Explore Ontario’s Beautiful Beaches

Contrary to popular belief, it gets extremely hot in Ontario during the summer months, especially in July and August, (so you’ll want to pack for hot weather). But if you’re visiting Ontario in the summer, this means it’s beach season.

The beaches themselves are free for public use, but some beaches have parking fees. Many offer free access if you walk in or find nearby free parking.

Some of Ontario’s best beaches are Grand Bend beach, Wasaga beach, Port Dover beach, Southampton beach, and Cobour beach. All you have to do is pack a picnic, bring a beach chair and towel, and spend the day in the sun.

Chase Waterfalls

Ontario is home to hundreds of waterfalls, many of which can be visited for free.

If waterfall chasing is on your itinerary, you can find the most waterfalls in Hamilton, with Owen Sound coming in as a close second. Regardless of your destination, you’ll want to add these amazing waterfalls to your summer itinerary:

• Inglis Falls near Owen Sound
• Eugenia Falls in Grey County
• Kakabeka Falls near Thunder Bay

Hike Scenic Ontario Trails

One of the best free things to do in Ontario this summer is to explore the province’s incredible hiking trails.

Many trails offer breathtaking views, forests, cliffs, and lakes, but the following are some of Ontario’s most breath-taking trails

• The Bruce Trail
• Dundas Peak trails
• Lion’s Head Lookout Trail
• Mono Cliffs Provincial Park trails
• Killarney Provincial Park day-use hiking areas

Many of the parks have paid parking, and almost all of these parks require reservations to be made in advance.

Visit Charming Small Towns

When people think of Ontario, they immediately think of Toronto and often assume that this city is the entire province. This is not the case. Once you get away from Toronto, Ontario is made up of charming small towns, many of which are along waterfront.

Ontario’s small towns are full of character and perfect for wandering, There are an abundance of towns to choose from which are spread across the province. But the most popular towns that most tourists enjoy are Elora, Stratford, Perth, Bayfield, Niagara-on-the-Lake, and Picton.

Visiting one or two of our small towns is the perfect way to enjoy a free day while visiting Ontario.

Driver’s Tip: If you’re a wine lover, I recommend visiting either Niagara-on-the-Lake or Picton in Prince Edward County which are Ontario’s two largest wine regions.

Discover Hidden Gems Along Lake Huron

While there are free things to do across Ontario, the Lake Huron area in southwestern Ontario, offers the most activities to choose fron. There are numerous small towns to visit, as well as beaches in every one.

In my opinion, the Lake Huron shoreline offers Ontario’s most beautiful sunsets and coastal scenery in the world. This is just one more reason to visit this part of Ontario.

Driver’s Tip: For a fun Saturday evening, visit Kincardine to participate in the Pipe Band parade. Kids and adults alike, love this event and it doesn’t cost a cent.

Walk Through Ontario’s Conservation Areas

There are many conservation areas scattered throughout Ontario, many of which offer free admission or low-cost parking.

Some of my favourite conservation areas to visit are:

• Elora Gorge surroundings
• Huron Natural Area in Kitchener
• Ball’s Falls Conservation Area (has a small entrance fee for parking)
• Hilton Falls trails

Explore Ontario’s Waterfront Trails

As indicated, many of Ontario’s towns and cities are located along a waterfront. Most destinations have beautiful waterfront pathways which are ideal for an afternoon stroll, cycling, and definitely photography.

If a lazy afternoon strolling one of Ontario’s waterfronts is on the agenda, I recommend the Kingston Waterfront Trail, Toronto’s Harbourfront, Collingwood Waterfront Trail, Sault Ste. Marie Boardwalk, or Spencer Park in Burlington.

All of these trails are accessible and come with spectacular views.

Attend Free Summer Festivals

Throughout the summer, many communities across Ontario host free festivals and events. The smaller towns publish summer event calendars which are pack with free activities.

Visit Public Gardens

If you love flowers, you’re in luck. Ontario boasts many beautiful gardens that are free to explore.

Some favorites among both visitors and locals include:

• Gage Park in Hamilton
• Spencer Smith Park gardens in Burlington

Explore Free Museums and Historic Sites

If you’re a history buff, you’re in luck! During the summer many museums offer free admission days. Check the local schedules for free community museums, historic homes, art gallaries, and indigenous cultureal centres.

This is a great way to learn about Ontario’s history and stay within your budget at the same time.

Take a Scenic Drive For A Budget-Friendly Things To Do In Ontario

Believe me when I say that Ontario has no shortage of scenic drives. Once you’re out of the Greater Toronto area, Ontario drives will take you across gently rolling hills, past lakes, and through forests, and small towns. It’s not always about the destination, but the journey.

Road tripping is my favourite thing to do (hence the name Road Trippin Kel 🙂 ). While there are many one day or multi-day road trips, to choose from, the top Ontario road trips you need to experience are Cruise the Coast which runs along Lake Erie, the Lighthouse Trail, which runs along Lake Huron, Georgian Bay Road Trip, which runs along Georgian Bay through Owen Sound to Tobermory, Ottawa Valley, which includes Algonquin Park, and the Oxford Cheese Trail, which runs through farmland in Oxford County.

If an Ontario road trip is on the agenda, all you have to do is prepare your vehicle,pack some snacks, and enjoy the views.

Visit Local Farmers’ Markets

Browsing a farmers’ market is completely free. It’s a fun way to spend a morning or afternoon and to get a glimpse into local communities.

Most communities have its own local markets, but the most popular free markets in Ontario can be found in St. Jacobs, Kingston, Stratford, Ottawa, and Peterborough.

Even if you don’t buy anything, the atmosphere is always fun and is worth experiencing.

Watch a Sunset Over the Great Lakes

Ontario offers some of Canada’s most spectacular sunsets which can be viewed from pretty much any location along Lake Huron. The top sunset viewing towns are Kincardine, Southampton, Tobermory, Grand Bend, and Goderich.

Watching the sun go down can easily be paired with a free day at the beach in any of these locations. What better way is there to end the day?

Ontario’s must-see lookouts that you’ll want to experience include:

Birdwatching: A Popular Free Thing To Do In Ontario In The Summer

Ontario is a paradise for birdwatchers. The best birding can be found along Lake Erie, which is located in Ontario’s south. Popular spots for bird watchers are Long Point, Presqu’ile Provincial Park Area, Point Pelee, and Prince Edward County.

Driver’s Tip: Point Pelee National Park, in Ontario’s south, is the most popular area to observe the spring and fall migration. Over 390 species of birds have been recorded as migrating to Point Pelee. The peek migration happens in May when bird watchers can attend the Festival of the Birds.
