If you’re planning a trip to Kingston, one stop you really shouldn’t skip is Fort Henry. The fort sits high on Point Henry overlooking the St. Lawrence River. Today, instead of active military operations, the fort is a living museum where visitors can step back into the 19th century and experience what life was like for soldiers stationed there.

What To Expect When You Visit Fort Henry
Not being much of a museum lover myself, I wasn’t sure what to expect when visiting Fort Henry. But I was pleasant surprised. Visiting Fort Henry felt less like a museum and more like stepping into a historical performance.
Guided Military Demonstrations
One of the biggest highlights is the daily military demonstrations. Costumed interpreters who are often in full 19th-century British military uniform, perform drills, marching routines, and cannon firing demonstrations that bring history to life.
Exploring The Fort Grounds
You can wander through barracks, parade squares, guard rooms, and tunnels. Each area is carefully preserved or reconstructed to reflect its original use. During the summer, guides are also available to take you on a tour. These tours are included in the price of admission.
Interactive Experiences
Depending on the season, you might encounter musket demonstrations, storytelling sessions, or even evening ghost tours that highlight the fort’s more mysterious side.

The Views Alone Are Worth The Trip
Even if you’re not deeply into history, Fort Henry is worth visiting for the views alone. From the ramparts, you get sweeping panoramas of Kingston Harbour, the St. Lawrence River, and the Thousand Islands region.
It’s especially beautiful in the late afternoon when the light hits the water and the city skyline starts to glow.

While visiting Fort Henry is easy, there are a few things to know that will make your visit much more enjoyable:
- Plan 2–3 hours to fully explore the site without rushing
- Wear comfortable shoes—there’s a lot of walking and uneven ground
- Check the schedule for demonstrations so you don’t miss the highlights
- Arrive early in peak season (summer weekends get busy)
- Bring a camera—the views are some of the best in Kingston
Best Time To Visit Fort Henry
Summer is the most popular time thanks to full programming and long daylight hours. However, late spring or early fall is also a great option if you want fewer crowds and cooler walking weather while still enjoying the outdoor demonstrations.
Main season opens daily from May 16th to September 7th, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Is Fort Henry Worth Visiting?
Even though I’m not one for museums, I say that you can’t miss Fort Henry when you’re visiting Kingston. Fort Henry combines history, performance, and scenery in a way that few attractions in Ontario do. It’s educational without feeling like a classroom, and entertaining without losing authenticity. My only regret is that I didn’t have more time to spend at the fort to see more of the demonstrations.
For anyone spending a weekend in Kingston, it’s one of the most memorable stops on the itinerary.
