Hiking Eagles Nest: One of Ontario’s Best Scenic Trails

I will never forget the first time I hiked up to Eagle’s Nest. The trail wasn’t long, but the views at the top? Absolutely unforgettable. I couldn’t believe that such a short hike would end with such spectacular scenery.

As I exited the forest and stepped out onto the cliffside lookout, it felt like the whole world opened up in front of me. Endless forests, and that wide-open Ontario sky. It was definitely one of those “wow” moments that made me stop, breathe, and just take it all in.

Next to the views, what I loved most about hiking Eagles Nest was how acessible it is. There’s no need to be a hardcore hiker for this hike. In fact, it’s the perfect adventure if you’re looking for stunning views and takes little effort.

Overview Eagles Nest

Eagles Nest Lookout is approximately 2.2 km. west of the Calabogie Peaks Resort on highway 508. If you’re taking an Ontario road trip through the Ottawa Valley, the trail is quite easy to find.

The trail leads up to the Eagles Nest Lookout, where you’ll be standing on a cliff offering a sweeping view of forests and lakes. The cliff has a drop of 120 meters. There are no guardrails, so extreme caution is required when taking in the views.

Parking

A newer, larger parking lot was built in order to accommodate the amount of vehicles which visit this trail. As of 2023, you must pay for parking. The trail, which is an old logging road, can be easily accessed from the parking lot. You just have to follow the signs to enter the trail.

For an alternate trail to the lookout, take Little Pine Path, which is indicated by the blue markers.

Driver’s Tip: Don’t park along the road. You will be towed!

Trail Details

The trail itself is noted as being relatively easy, with a slight incline as you ascend to the lookout. This terrain makes the trail suitable for all hikers and skill-levels. Although the trail is rated easy by All-Trails, you should be cautious of your footing as there are loose rocks and tree roots along the trail.

You will hike the old logging road for approximately 1.5 kilometers before hitting the lookout. The closer you get to the lookout, the steeper and rockier the incline gets, but it’s only for a short distance. You will definitely know once you’ve made it as you can’t go any further without falling over the cliff.

The trail is suitable for all ages, however, due to the roots and loose rocks, I wouldn’t say that the trail is wheelchair accessible. Furry friends are also welcome, although they must be kept on a leash.

The entire trail, in and out, can be done in under an hour.

Things To Watch For And Tips For Hiking Eagles Nest

Eagles Nest is a year-round trail, although it’s not maintained throughout the Winter months (a great time for snowshoing). If you plan on hiking at Eagles Nest, there are a few things to know before you go:

• the lookout is on a cliff which sits 120 meters high. There are no rails, so caution must be exercised, especially when hiking with children
• after a rain, especially in the spring, the trail gets quite muddy and slippery. A good pair of hiking boots/shoes are recommended
• the trail gets quite busy, especially on weekends and during the Fall. Go through the week in order to minimize the crowds
• there are plenty of mosquitos during the spring and summer. Bring bug spray. With winter, comes a lot of ice. The most beautiful time to hike Eagles Nest is in the Fall when the leaves change colour
• there aren’t many amenities at Eagles Nest, but there is a portable toilet in the parking lot
