The Liberty Inn & Nordic Spa: A Bit of History
The Liberty Inn & Spa is tucked away into the tiny hamlet of Cataract in Caledon and has been welcoming visitors for well over a century. The beautiful stone building was originally built in 1855 as a post office and general store, serving as a gathering place for the local community and travellers passing through the area.
Over the years it evolved into an inn and even reportedly operated as a speakeasy during Prohibition, giving the building plenty of stories to tell. Today, the lovingly restored property blends its rich history with modern comfort, now home to the family owned Liberty Inn and a peaceful Nordic spa that invites guests to slow down and relax in one of Caledon’s most charming historic settings.
Contactless Check-In
Reserving a room and the Nordic Spa is a breeze at The Liberty Inn & Nordic Spa. Immediately upon making your reservation you will receive a confirmation email, which is followed by an email with times available for your Nordic Spa experience.
The day before arrival, you’ll receive another email which contains the code to enter the property, as well as the code to access your room. It’s not necessary to visit the office, but I suggest you do at some point during your stay. The owners are extremely helpful and are more than happy to assist with whatever you need.
First Impressions: Calm Comes Quickly
From the moment I pulled up, I could tell this wasn’t going to be an ordinary overnight stay. The setting is serene and quiet, surrounded by trees and open space. It immediately felt like a true escape from the busy city life that I had left behind.
Having only 5 suites, it’s not a massive resort. In my opinion this makes it even better. Everything feels more personal, intimate, and unrushed.
As I was fiddling with my emails to locate the gate code, the innkeeper popped out of his office and opened the gate for me. He waited while I unloaded my car and offered to carry my luggage to my room. He also gave me suggestions on where to grab an early dinner and explained the spa procedures to me. It was the most perfect and friendliest welcome I’ve ever received. I knew right then that my stay would be nothing short of perfect – and I wasn’t wrong!

The Room: Cozy, Comfortable & Thoughtfully Designed
The Liberty Inn & Nordic Spa is home to 5 rooms, 2 of which are suites accommodating up to 4 people, and 3 suites which accommodate 2 people.
My room was the Arden suite which is located up a short flight of stairs. While the stairs weren’t steep or high, you might have some difficulty accessing this room if you have trouble climbing stairs.
The Arden suite struck the perfect balance between modern comfort and countryside charm. It had plush bedding, soft lighting, and that quiet you only get outside the city.
One of my favourite parts? The feeling that you can truly unplug. No traffic noise. No constant distractions. Just calm.
The accommodation encourages you to slow down. The plush comfy sofa invites you to curl up with a good book and a glass of wine. Or you might choose to do nothing at all (which I fully embraced).

Room Amenities That Encourage Well-Being
There are so many room amenities, all of which promote relaxation and well-being. Every detail has been thoughtfully implemented to make your stay as relaxing as possible. No matter what room you choose, you can expect top-notch attention to detail:
- the coziest, fluffiest, bathrobes I’ve ever experienced
- comfy bed with cotton sheets
- holistic skin care set
- natural hair care products
- Kala Red Light Therapy Mask
- record player and albums
- steam showers in the Arden, Norwood, and Rhodes suites
- in-suite sauna in the Hawthorne suite
- fully stocked kitchen, which includes tea, coffee, water, fruit, and the makings for breakfast (more on that later)

Dining at The Liberty Inn & Nordic Spa
There is no dining room at The Liberty Inn & Nordic Spa in Caledon, but there is a fully stocked kitchen in each suite. This provides you with the option of cooking meals right in your suite (trust me, once you arrive, you won’t want to leave). If you haven’t brought anything to cook, not to worry! The Inn has teamed up with a chef who will have a frozen meal delivered right to your room. All you have to do is heat it up.
If you want to forgo the in-room dining, there are restaurants nearby. The owners recommend Two Brothers Restaurant or Rays 3rd Generation in Fescue, which is approximately a 5 minute drive from the Inn, or Greystones which is approximately 15 minutes from the Inn. I opted to have dinner at The Barley Vine Rail Co. in Orangeville. Let me tell you, they had the best burger I’ve ever had, and the service was top-notch. I’ll definitely be going back!
In the morning there’s no need to rush to get out in time for breakfast. You can enjoy freshly baked croissants and eggs right in your suite, all of which are complimentary. The perfect way to start your day!

The Nordic Spa Experience: The Ultimate Reset
Now let’s talk about the highlight of my stay. The Nordic Spa!
If you’ve never experienced a Nordic spa circuit before, it typically involves rotating between hot pools or saunas, cold plunges, and relaxation areas. The hot-cold-rest cycle is designed to improve circulation, reduce stress, and leave you feeling incredibly refreshed. I’ll admit that I have a difficult time getting past the hot tub 🙂 .
At The Liberty Inn & Nordic Spa in Caledon, the experience is intimate and peaceful (especially since I was solo on this trip). Reservations for the Nordic Spa are required. The time selected is yours to enjoy, as other guests are not allowed during your time slot. It was this solitude that made my time at the Nordic Spa so special. All of the other Nordic Spa’s I’ve visited in Ontario had a tendency to be a bit noisy.
First, ease into the warm water and let the heat melt away your tension. Then comes the cold plunge! My least favourite lol. I found it surprisingly invigorating, but slightly shocking. Afterward, I spent time in the sauna before relaxing and drying off in front of the fire.
By the time the hour was up, I was completely relaxed and ready for bed. It was the perfect way to end the day.

What To Bring For The Nordic Spa
You don’t have to bring much in order to enjoy the Nordic Spa. The owners have thought of everything. There’s cozy, plush robes in your suite, sandals are provided, as well as towels, and water. All you need is your swimsuit!
Driver’s Tip: You are allowed alcohol in the spa area but no glass is allowed. Bring a plastic travelling cup if you want to enjoy a glass of wine in front of the fire.
Why Caledon Is Perfect for a Relaxing Getaway
One of the best parts about staying at The Liberty Inn & Nordic Spa, besides the Nordic Spa, is the location of the Inn. Caledon is known for its scenic countryside, charming roads, and proximity to nature.
You can easily pair your stay with:
- A scenic drive through the hills
- A visit to a local café or farm market in Erin

- A hike at the Forks of Credit Provincial Park, located just a hop skip and a jump from the Inn.
The Liberty Inn & Nordic Spa is close enough to Toronto, Hamilton, and Kitchener-Waterloo, for a spontaneous overnight trip, yet far enough to truly feel like you’ve had a break.
Who This Stay Is Perfect For

Would I Go Back To The Liberty Inn & Nordic Spa? Absolutely!
My stay at The Liberty Inn & Nordic Spa in Caledon was exactly what I hoped for. It was relaxing, rejuvenating, and simply beautiful. I really didn’t want to leave!
The Inn isn’t about over-the-top luxury, although there’s plenty to go around. You can definitely expect lots of extra’s which will make your stay a memorable one. The owners have thought of everything needed in order to allow you to slow down and let yourself fully relax.
And honestly? We don’t do that nearly enough.
