Winter Fun in Blue Mountain: Other Than Skiing

Many avid skiers head to Blue Mountain throughout the winter months to hit the slopes. Blue Mountain offers the largest ski slope in the Province of Ontario. But did you know that Blue Mountain offers so much more than just skiing? Myself and my family of non-skiers just returned from a week at Blue Mountains, and we had so much winter fun in Blue Mountain.

I love writing content for my fellow Ontario road trippers. However, there is a cost to run a website. There may be affiliate links scattered throughout the website. If you click on a link, don’t worry, there is no cost to you.

My family and I wanted a Winter holiday and what better place than Blue Mountian, We are a family ranging in age from 2 – 64, and Blue Mountain offered activities for all of our interests. We had so much fun participating in as many winter activities as we possibly could, that we didn’t want to leave.

In this post, I’ll share with you the activities that we did, as well as winter activities to keep your entire family busy.

Snow Boarding at Blue Mountain

My daughter was an avid snow boarder back in the day. Somehow she managed to talk my teenage granddaughter into taking a snowboarding lesson with her.

They purchase the beginner package, which included a 1 hour lesson and rentals. My daughter enjoyed it and at first, so did my granddaughter. However, it turned out that the “teacher” wasn’t the warmest instructor and he turned my granddaughter off after the first little bit.

They also were disappointed that they only had the opportunity to board down the hill two times. Having said that, they were both glad that they took the lesson.

Ski Lesson on the Slopes at Blue Mountains

My son-in-laws opted for the ski lessons. They also purchased a beginners pass. One of my son-in-laws had skied in his younger days, however, the other had never skiied.

The completely enjoyed the experience, but complained about the pain of the ski boots (which I can empathize with);.

Unlike my daughter and granddaughter, they were able to ski down the hill several times during their lesson.

Painting at Crock A Doodle

While the older folk were skiing and boarding, I took my 2 year old granddaughter to Crock A Doodle where she spend a couple of hours painting a ceramic dog.

The experience was fun and provided some valuable one on one time with the granddaughter. Once her masterpiece was completed, the staff put it through the kiln, and I picked it up the next day.

This was a fun activity for both granddaughter and Nana alike and best of all, we didn’t have to be out in the cold!

Swimming and “Warming Up” in the Hot Tub

After a freezing day out on the slopes, a few of us decided to warm up in the hot tub at the resort. The hot tub was gorgeous, however, it wasn’t working properly when we visited.

The outside air was -27 Celsius, and the hot tub was only 90 degrees. It was quite cool, and needless to say, we didn’t stay in it for long.

Driver’s Tip: The outdoor hot tub and pool were only available to guests staying at the Mosaic, however, there is a plunge pool available to other visitors to Blue Mountains.

Browse the Shops at Blue Mountain

Every time I visit Blue Mountains, there are different shops and restaurants. I’m pretty sure we tried most of the restaurants, however, that will be in a separate post.

The best shop that we found was the spice shop. Since one of my son-in-laws is a chef, he purchased the spiciest salsa they sold. Needless to say, I wasn’t able to even try it.

The owner of this shop was incredible and allowed my son-in-law to taste-test everything before he made his purchase. I swear there are over 100 different salsas and hot sauces found in this store. I highly recommend it for any chefs or want to be chefs, you won’t be disappointed.

Hike n Tube

Why not participate in some good old fashion winter fun when visiting Blue Mountain? The hike and tube is the ideal way to introduce new riders to the slopes at Blue Mountain without the speed of skiing.

Know Before You Go

  • All tubers must ride alone (including toddlers)
  • Tubers must be able to exit and enter the tube on their own
  • Only empty tubes are allowed to be pulled up the hill
  • Spectators are not allowed in the park
  • If a tuber needs assistance pulling their tube up the hill, a non-paying person may assist

Ice Skating Was a Fun Thing to do in Blue Mountain

I think we can all say that ice skating was the highlight of our time spent in Blue Mountains. Some of us had never been on skates before. And some of us haven’t been on skates in 40 years.

The majority of us used the little red aids to push around and prevent falls. It was definitely a sight to see.

I didn’t realize that there was outdoor skating in Blue Mountains. It’s not within walking distance from the Village. The skating trail is located at the summit of the mountain, past the caves.

Our skating and skate rentals were included in our hotel stay. However, the trail is open to everyone and can be purchased with a Play All Day Pass or by reserving your spot on the website.
